Es Nostro Cel proposal
This is our proposal video: We propose that WASP-166 and WASP-166b be renamed as Filetdor and Catalineta. The names correspond to the protagonists of a traditional oral tale from the Balearic Islands (rondaia) called «Na Filet d’Or«. Their protagonists are a small golden sea serpent, Filet d’Or, like the yellow star located in the Hydra constellation; and Catalineta, a small and young girl just like the hot Neptune that orbits the star every 5 days.
&… We achieved it!!! The International Astronomical Union (IAU) accepted our proposal taking into account more than 600 of them from 91 different countries. Only 20 stellar sistemes could be named. For that reason, we can celebrate that:
- We incrased the scientific culture and audience curiosity regarding astronomy. It was possible thanks to our interdisciplinary & interactive activities (mainly) focused to the youngsters. Thanks to their enthusiam, we still doing these activities after one year!
- Our oral heritage is known around the world. Not only thanks to the hundreds that joined us but also to the milions that participated at NameExoWorlds. In fact, IAU highlighted our proposal in their press release.
- There is a third spanish author (1st in catalan language) naming a stellar system through its literary work. Antoni M. Alcover joined Cervantes & Rosalía de Castro the year after the 160th anniversary of his birth.
- Now, including the basque candidature, all four official languages from Spain are naming 4 stars and 7 exoplanets. Great news taking into account that a culturally sensitive decade has started: the United Nations Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022 – 2032).
- We promoted the importance women and girls both in sciences and arts. Our folktales, especially Na Filet d’Or, present all kinds of women that can be whatever they want.
This proposal was democratically selected since the hybrid audience attending the contest of the Teatre Principal de Santanyí voted their favourite one. In addition, people from all around endorse it, including from all islands, Spain, and elsewhere!
The proposal was created by Daniela Alfaro, Ian Vidal, Jaime Hernández y Jimena González. These high school students convinced us with their excellent defence. Congratulations to the four of them!
